If you have a Goldendoodle or a Bernedoodle, then you know that their beautiful coats require special care. While it may be tempting just to let them run free and enjoy their fur, the reality is that doodles’ coats tend to become easily matted if not regularly groomed. But don't worry—there are some steps you can take to prevent your pup's fur from matting up. Read on to learn how!
Brushing Is Essential
One of the best ways to prevent your pup's coat from becoming matted is by brushing it regularly. Brushing helps distribute natural oils throughout your pup's coat, which helps keep it healthy and prevents mats from forming in the first place. It also removes excess dirt and debris that can lead to mats. Depending on your doodles' coat (straight, wavy, curly) the number of times your pup needs a weekly brushing may vary. We recommend brushing your straight and wavy coated Goldendoodle at least twice a week with a slicker brush and metal comb for best results. If you have doodle with a curlier coat, brushing may need to be done every other day or even daily with longer coats. If you notice any mats starting to form, use a dematting comb with detangling spray to help break them up before they become too severe.
Groom Regularly
Another great way to prevent matting is by taking your pup for regular grooming sessions with a professional groomer. A groomer will be able to properly trim and clean your dog's coat, as well as check for any potential issues such as skin irritations or parasites that could contribute to matting of the fur. It's always best to make sure that you schedule regular grooming appointments with a professional groomer who has experience working with doodles—they'll know exactly how often and how much grooming is needed for optimal results! The longer you keep your doodle's coat, the more often they will need to be groomed. Shorter coats are easier to maintain and do not require as much daily upkeep but we know how hard it is to resist the fluffy doodle coats!
